Does Guiding Stars differentiate between naturally occurring and added sugars?

As the food label does not distinguish between naturally occurring and added sugars (nor is there a biochemical method to measure these independently), the Guiding Stars algorithm cannot differentiate these sugars. However, the overall sugar content of products is only evaluated and debited, IF sugars have been added to the product. To determine this, the ingredient list of each product is scanned for a comprehensive list of added sugars keywords. The presence of one or more of these keywords triggers the added sugars debit. All foods that receive this debit have at least some added sugar, but it is the total amount of sugars (naturally occurring and added) that is evaluated. If added sugars are ever declared separately on the Nutrition Facts label, we would certainly adjust the algorithm accordingly.
